The things we see, or do not see!

As I start to write our blog each week I never really know where I am going. A thought seems to go in one ear then straight out the other. Now I can hear some readers of our blog saying, "that's because there is nothing in the middle to stop it" 😂. Now what were my thoughts for this week? I'm sure they'll come to me.

Hoping to remember what I was thinking about, I decided to share the sunrise we saw when we were walking up to Larbert station on Monday morning. This reminded me of the old Scots song:

Oh it's nice to get up in the morning,
When the sun begins to shine,
At four or five or six o'clock
In the good old summer time,
But when the snow is snowing,
And it's murky overhead,
It's nice to get up in the morning,
But it's better to lie in your bed:

Getting up early really does have some benefits, not only can we witness such stunning sunrises, the bird song is also just so delightful. This year we seem to have had an abundance of robins around bursting their wee lungs as they praise their Maker for another day.

Spring though is such a glorious season and as we have been out and about, we've seen huge patches of snowdrops, crocuses and of daffodils, or as I said when remarking to Shona the other day just look at the "daffodil dils", that gave us a wee laugh, but oh the silly things we say. It's as if we speak before we put our brain into gear.

Later in the week Shona drew my attention to something she had seen, which I couldn't see, all Shona said was, "if you dinnae see it, you cannae see it". Which I suppose in one sense is true, if I don't see something then I cannot see it.

This reminded me of the old joke about when Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. In the middle of the night Holmes wakes up and gives Dr Watson a nudge. "Watson" he says, "look up in the sky and tell me what you see."

"I see millions of stars, Holmes," says Watson.

And Holmes asks, "what do you conclude from that Watson?"

Watson thinks for a moment. "Well," he says, "astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meterologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I see that God is all-powerful, and we are small and insignificant. Erm, what does it tell you Holmes?"

"Watson, said Holmes, I see that someone has stolen our tent!”

You know there are many things we look at, but we fail to see them, look carefully at what is around us and be amazed. There are some lines in an old hymn; "Loved with everlasting love" that say this:

                    Heaven above is softer blue,
                    Earth around is sweeter green;
                    Something lives in every hue
                    Christless eyes have never seen:
                    Birds with gladder songs o'erflow,
                    Flowers with deeper beauties shine.......

Without doubt we live in a beautiful country and over the years Shona and I have been very privileged to see it from many mountain tops and valleys. What we see never ceases to amaze. There is a hymn, "How Great Thou art" written by someone, I'm sure, must have been a hillwalker.

For who else could pen words like this:

When through the woods,
and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook,
And feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul,
My Saviour God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul,
My Saviour God to Thee,
How great Thou Art, how great Thou art!

Now I remember what I was going to mention, and that was the number of steps we have taken since starting, from early January, in earnest to train for our Lands' End to John O'Groats walk. According to our FITBITs the steps we have taken are in excess of 1.5 million, yes you read correctly,"1.5 million steps" which equates to approximately 700 miles.

Joking aside one thought that never leaves us is, why are we attempting to walk over 1100 miles in 3 months? Is it because we want to? That has to be a yes. Is it to raise funds for Cancer Research UK? We would answer most definitely.

The most important reason, however, is based on words we find in the Bible that say: "So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do. do it all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 31) We sincerely believe that the task we undertake must be to this end, we are thankful to God that He has given us the desire, health, and strength to attempt such a challenge and it is simply our duty to acknowledge that all glory honour and praise be given to Him.

Finally, we would like to express a heart-felt thank you to all who have encouraged us and to those who have donated to our giving page. Also, we really do appreciate any comments and feedback you have given.
